AAA Mid-Atlantic: August deadliest driving month

If you're planning on hitting the roads during the dog days of summer, buckle up and take extra caution. Historically, August is the deadliest month to drive, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic.

The month holds four of the deadliest driving days, according to the American Safety Council: August 3, 4, 6 and 12. July, its closest rival, has three of the 10 deadliest days of the year.

In terms of traffic fatalities, August was Virginia's second deadliest month last year with 74 deaths and over 5,800 injuries. There were over 10,000 crashes on Virginia highways in 2012.

"The summer driving season may soon seem to be coming to an end but the reality is that many people are packing up for their last minute summer vacations before children begin packing their backpacks for the school year," said Martha Mitchell Meade of AAA Mid-Atlantic.Two years ago, Virginia was ranked the 16th deadliest state to drive, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The summer's deadliest driving days fall between August 1 and Labor Day.

4. August 3

5. January 1

6. August 6

7. August 4

8. August 12

9. July 2

10. September 2
