Government Affairs Intern (Unpaid, 10 weeks)

Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety seeks a Government Affairs Intern to assist in its efforts to further auto safety through advocacy in Congress and state legislatures. This position is based in Washington DC and reports to the Legislative Program Manager.

About Advocates: Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety is an alliance of consumer, health and safety groups and insurance companies and agents working together to make America's roads safer. Advocates encourages the adoption of federal and state laws, policies and programs that save lives and reduce injuries. By joining its resources with others, Advocates helps build coalitions to increase participation of a wide array of groups in public policy initiatives which advance highway and auto safety. JOB SUMMARY: The legislative department seeks an intern to work with staff to research and develop auto safety legislation, develop grassroots communication tools, and work on all phases of project development.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
o Conduct research for new and continuing federal and state auto safety legislation;
o Prepare materials for bi-weekly auto safety newsletter;
o Conduct outreach and maintain Advocates grassroots membership database;
o Help develop e-strategies for promoting auto safety legislation;
o Assist with preparations for annual "Roadmap" Report;
o Administrative support for all Advocates staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Possession or anticipated completion of a degree in political science or public policy;
2. Ability to work collaboratively in promoting the goals and objectives of the organization;
3. Superior written and oral communication skills;
4. Creative and strategic thinking;
5. Ability to work independently;
6. Ability to perform multiple tasks effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced environment;
7. Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.

TIME COMMITMENT AND PAY: Advocates internships are flexible, with a goal of 25 hours per week, and are unpaid. Possible college credit available.
