National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Reauthorization
S.1449- The Motor Vehicle and Highway Safety Improvement Act of 2011 (Mariah's Act)
There is an unfinished safety agenda of improvements to motor vehicle safety standards that were inadequately addressed in the 2005 surface transportation authorization, the SAFETEA-LU bill. The Motor Vehicle and Highway Safety Improvement Act of 2011 (Mariah's Act), S.1449, introduced in July 2011 to reauthorize NHTSA, includes a number of Advocates' safety priorities:
-
Grant programs to encourage state adoption of graduated driver licensing (GDL) laws, primary enforcement seat belt and booster seat laws, alcohol-ignition interlock devices for first time offenders laws, and anti-texting laws;
-
Standards set by NHTSA to ensure the reliability and performance of vehicle electronic systems, brake override, pedal placement, and event data recorders;
-
Improved NHTSA vehicle safety database with public access to government information about safety-related data, recalls and defects;
-
Enhanced child safety standards including rear seat belt reminders and unattended passenger reminder systems and;
-
Better transparency and consumer information related to defects investigations.
