Fatality
Data Released by NHTSA
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA)
recently released the latest round of Fatality Analysis Reporting
System (FARS) data. The data shows that fatalities involving rollovers,
motorcycles, SUVs, and large trucks increased in 2004 compared
to 2003. The FARS data also showed that pedestrian and alcohol
related fatalities decreased slightly in 2004.
Report
on Florida Motorcycle Helmet Law Repeal
NHTSA recently released a report showing that since 2000, when
Florida repealed their all-rider motorcycle helmet requirement,
motorcycle fatalities have increased 81%. The report also showed
that "non-fatal serious injuries began increasing in the
first six months of 2000, increased by 32 percent in the first
year following law repeal. There was a 40 percent increase in
the number of injured motorcyclists who were admitted to hospitals.
Admissions for head injuries increased by 82 percent."
